These courses are non-credit and have no tests, assignments or exams. Many of the instructors are retired academics.
Currently courses are offered in Halifax, Bedford, Upper Tantallon, Dartmouth, Truro and Mahone Bay. Now efforts are underway to establish a branch in Liverpool.
An introductory meeting will be held Fri. June 1 at 2 pm, at Trinity Hall, 198 Church St., Liverpool. At that time, Ken Rozee, past president of SCANS, will explain the SCANS program and you will be able to meet the instructors of our planned fall courses and share in their enthusiasm about this program. The recent announcement by NovaScotia Power that it is seeking yet more rate increases - 3% in each of the next two years - has caused many Nova Scotians to say "enough is enough."
They are expressing their displeasure - indeed anger - in a petition which over 29-thousand Nova Scotians have already signed. Should you wish to take part in this petition go to http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/deny-nova-scotia-power-a-rate-increase- in-2013.html

Nova Scotians being treated for abnormal heart rhythm caused by blood flow will have access to a new stroke-prevention drug under the provincial Pharmacare program. The anti-coagulant Dabigatran has been added to Pharmacare for eligible patients who need an alternative to Warfarin. Dabigatran, best known by the brand name Pradax, will be listed as a benefit to help prevent stroke in eligible atrial fibrillation patients who cannot be treated with Warfarin. Pradax is similar to Warfarin in preventing stroke and has a similar safety profile. Unlike Warfarin, Pradax does not need to be monitored as frequently.

Some warning about YARD SALE & GARAGE SALE safety regulations from Health Canada. You cannot import, sell, distribute or even lend or giveaway products that do not meet the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.
Baby walkers, lawn darts and yo-yo balls - a sticky rubber ball attached to a sticky string similar to a bungee cord- often available in the US but are banned in Canada.
Health Canada has pamphlets for garage sale vendors and second-hand store owners to help guide them. The agency also lists recalls on its website.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded its recall of some salad products. Earlier, it issued a recall on some Compliments brand bagged salads and coleslaw. The foods may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.
The products are sold at Sobeys stores across the country, except Quebec. The bags in question have expiry dates between May 12 and May 22.
The Compliments products include:
Garden Supreme, Simply Romaine, Harvest Romaine,
American Blend, Coleslaw, Garden Salad
Now, the CFIA says some bags of salads - River Ranch and Sysco Natural brand - distributed to restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes need to be thrown in the garbage because they may be contaminated.
The CFIA said the food may not look or smell bad, but Listeria can be harmful to pregnant women, seniors and people with weakened immune systems.
